DSM’s mission is to “create brighter lives for people today and generations to come.” To put this mission into practice, DSM has defined a corporate strategy for 2010-2015 – DSM in motion: driving focused growth, which can be summarized as follows:
- DSM aims to leverage its unique capabilities in Life Science and Materials Sciences and the cross-fertilization between the two to address unmet needs in relation to three trends of global shifts: climate and energy; health; and wellness.
- To ensure that we will generate maximum sustainable growth for the company; four growth drivers will be used: high growth economies, innovation, sustainability, and acquisitions and partnerships.
DSM CEO Feike Sijbesma quotes, “Business cannot succeed in a society that fails.” DSM’s integrated Triple P approach simultaneously pursues sustainable value creation for all stakeholder on the three dimensions of People (improving people’s lives through DSM’s activities and innovations), Planet (improving the environmental impact of DSM’s activities and products ECO+) and Profit (creating profitable businesses and value for DSM’s shareholders while meeting DSM’s ECO+ objectives to provide solutions to global societal needs).
For DSM, we have a bigger goal than short-term profitability. Our five-year global strategy is based on creating a long-lasting and sustainable business. To achieve these high-reaching goals, every business group in DSM has changed and/or arranged the organization structure to incorporate Sustainability into their everyday work lifestyle.
Two cases of DMS’s mission in practice:
DSM is using our knowledge and capabilities to find sustainable solutions to micronutrient deficiency and the devastation it brings to families, cities, and countries around the world. Micronutrient deficiency or “hidden hunger” is a chronic condition where an individual doesn’t receive sufficient vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients to promote proper development and avoid chronic disease. According to organizations including UNICEF, hidden hunger issues may cause up to a third of world’s population to fail to meet their full cognitive and physical potential. DSM has partnered with several agencies and governments to combat micronutrient deficiency. For example, with the UN World Food Program, DSM uses its science expertise in to create new products, develop new methods of delivery, and implement solutions around the world. DSM has created millions of MixMe sachets, which contain the blend of vitamins and minerals to meet a person’s recommended daily intake. WFP has distributed in Kenya, Zambia, Bangladesh and other countries to help with hunger and micronutrient deficiency issues specifically in women and children.
Sustainability is not just a corporate social responsibility for DSM but a business driver. DSM has set ambitious sustainability targets whereby 2015, ECO+ product will account for over 80% of innovation sales and over 50% of total running business. To achieve these targets, sustainability is increasingly embedded in all DSM’s business activities.
